CBSE region topper from SBOA School and Junior College, Chennai

I woke up this morning to the newspaper's headlines "SBOA student tops Chennai region" I was so curious, I dropped everything that needed to be done and read the articles back to back! I'm patting myself on the back for putting my kid into a school that does take the trouble to produce toppers........

There is a lot of bashing going on about how schools 'torture' students for a 100% pass and state ranks, but not many talk about how 1 mark difference can push you down by 1000 ranks in the competitive cut offs for colleges.

Can we really blame the School for going that extra mile to produce good results? After all isn't this the only criteria most parents look for when put their ward in one? In my opinion if I'm given the choice to alter my destiny in a few years time, I would give it my best, night and day! So Is burn out a non issue? CBSE has done a good job by offering varied streams to opt for based on one's interest, so a little competitiveness and coaching in doing something that you like should not lead to a burn out.

The main cause of a burn out is usually doing something that you are not cut out to do. So I think it's vital for parents to guide their wards in their respective areas of interest. In most Fields, the pay for the top posts are usually similar. So instead of following the 'herd mentality' try to tailor the options to your wards areas of interest. It would make a world of difference to their future happiness!

Olympiads

With my kids moving on to classes where Olympiads are becoming increasingly more complicated and competitive. There are four exams that can be taken NCO - National Computer Olympiad NSO - National Science Olympiad IMO - International Math Olympiad IEO - International English Olympiad For the dates on which these exams are conducted and the classes eligible please refer to their website below http://www.sofworld.org / The site provides sample questions, training apps, previous years question papers, links to stores selling practise books, etc. We took the exams for the last two years and was an eye opener. I would call it useful for the below reasons... It trains the kids to get accustomed to the competitive exam papers patterns that most college entrances have. It gives them limited time to finish the paper. Teaches them to get comfortable with answer shading on a computerized answer sheet. The best is the accurate feedback given. The feedback highlights...

Best Practices for Online Schooling From Home

Indian society values education above everything else, so it's natural that schools and parents embraced online schooling the moment the Pandemic struck. Every school, parent and student are dealing with the unique challenges that come with learning via screens, systems and devices. It’s a good idea to prepare yourself with the basic requirements of online schooling. Choosing a Device Children should not use Mobile phone screens for online learning. The small screen size can cause eye irritation and short sightedness. Screens need to be at a distance of at least 18 inches from the eye to reduce eye strain and that is impossible with a small screen. A Desktop, Laptop, Chrome book, iPad or other android tablets with a minimum screen size of at least 10 inches or more would be the best for online learning.  Retina displays and similar technologies are designed to be eye friendly. Even a used deskt op with a 21 inches monitor (which are common these days)...
