Dilemma of the second language

Tamil or Hindi ?

The argument continues......

If you are a Tamilian, and have travelled outside Tamilnadu, you would know that, for survival Hindi is essential. However Tamil being the mother tongue, is it justified choosing any other language over it? Already, we have designated the second language status to it, should we throw it out totally, except for may be using it colloquially?

Below are a couple of points by Dr. R. Jegnnath on the positive aspects of Tamil,
  • Tamil is a very logical language compared to many others, eg.,we don't need to assign gender to inanimate things.
  • Tamil has perhaps the most extensive, scientific and intricate system of prosody. While the Sanskrit prosody is much more extensive and intricate than that of English, it pales in comparison to that of Tamil.
  • In spite of being spoken by a whole race of people including the illiterate among them, Tamil has maintained such a continuity and uniformity that literature written 2000 years ago can be understood by the educated readers of the present. This is unusual.

So, I guess English as the first language has become a necessity, but Tamil as a second language is a better choice for your child as it would improve his logic. Also learning a difficult language such as Tamil would make the road easier with children's other academic endeavours.

Good luck on language selection for your child.

  1. Hi! My name is Suchi. I live in US, and like to get tips and insight to enroll my daughters in SBOA school.

I have been doing research/homework about this school (which is near/in my neighborhood), however, I have no support (references) or knowledge on how to reach my goals.

Would you mind to give some insight and tips to reach my goals? Thanks in advance.

    ~Suchi.

  2. Hi Suchi,

You would need to contact the school office for appilcation forms.

The LKG admission application issue date was over on the 21st Dec 2011 for the academic year starting from June 2012.

For admission into other classes it's based on how many kids leave the school that year. So it's would be wise to apply ahead.

Since it is a State Bank run school the no of kids leaving due to parents being transfered would be considerable.

    Good luck with the admissions!

    -Researcher.

The LKG Books have arrived!

The books for all classes are generally given out during the last week of April. The kids are all waiting to take a peek into their brand new books for the coming year. The tamil books are the stateboard books and you can download them from the below link http://www.textbooksonline.tn.nic.in/ The CBSE prescribed NCERT books can be found in the below link http://ncert.nic.in/ncerts/textbook/textbook.htm SBOA uses a variety of publishers from Macmillan to Cordova for different subjects and all the books will be provided by the school. For us parents it's a mad rush to finish brown papering the notebooks and binding the textbooks! "Mummy, not the orange paper take the light brown ones, I like them better" with suggestions that sound more like ultimatums, I'm dreaming of the day that they will cover their own books! But according to my wiser father, I might as well give up as he reminds me that he covered my books all through my school years! ...

Term 2 in UKG

This has been an eventful term, with loads of extracurricular activities and competitions. They had their annual exhibition "C onnoisseur 2010" and it was a real treat, the amount of work that had gone into it was tremendous, the themes were varied from airports to circus to music. The kids had a great time putting the whole thing together. though parents did most of the work for the junior sections the presentations were done by the kids. This term has seen a lot more writing and reading skills being encouraged, as well as basic calculations in Math. They have a very organized way of handing out homework so we always know what to expect when. The observation would start by the first week of December. And looking forward to the Holidays!

School Days are finally here!

School re-opened on the 11th june , the introduction by the Principal was good, except for he fact that the audi was inadequately ventilated. There could have been more fans placed and the windows could have been opened. After a stuffy 45 min session, the kids and the parents were equally exhausted! The classroom visits were better, except again for the crowd. The initial interviews were organized beautifully, just wish the induction was planned as well too..... The whole affair was thankfully over in two hours time.... Hope to have a better experience once the classes start though!
